Vincent’s 3rd birthday is right around the corner on the 20th. We have briefly talked about what we would like to do to celebrate. I would love to be the type to call everyone over for a huge celebration, but being the quiet folk we are… I wouldn’t know how to throw such a large party. I don’t even know who I could invite. I could send invites to all his class at church, but seeing how I don’t know any of them it would feel odd. We could rent one of those huge jump houses and invite the neighbor’s kids over. The only problem with that is I think Vincent wouldn’t like being bounced around by the bigger kids. Chuck and I would love to take him to Disney or some other theme park for his birthday. He had such a great time at Sea World. Then there is just the normal family gathering that we usually end up doing for everyone’s birthday. I would love this to be a fun memorable time for Vincent. It’s not everyday that a young lad turns 3 after all.

One of our family’s favorite things to do, while riding in the van, is to play a game of Spot. First you have to find a VW bug. Then you have to be the first one to call out Spot and the color of the bug. For instance, Spot! Green for a green bug. If you are the first to see it and call it you get a point. Now if the spot happens to be white and you call it, you have taken the power of the game and wiped all scores. With the scores wiped out the game resets and you get to start all over. Calling a white car can be the best part of the game, esp. if you are losing. I for one love calling out SPOT! White, then listening to all the moans. The first person to reach 15 points wins bragging rights until the next game starts all over. If you get home and no one has reached 15 the person closest to the goal wins for that day. The trick to this game is that you can only play it while sitting in a car. No cheating calling out spots in the parking lot before you reach the car. Remember have fun and watch for the white. Be careful not to call Spot! white if you are winning.

Remember back when life was easy and you could go to a parade to see a marching band, a few floats, and maybe get lucky at catching some candy? Time sure has changed. Today we took the kids to the local 4th of July parade. Instead of seeing people being proud of our country we saw all the “vote for me” people lined up down our main street. It wasn’t about the independence of our country at all. People were riding in rented corvettes waving signs and tossing tons of candy at the children. The kids got almost as much candy as they do when we go trick or treating. Where were the floats? The closest thing I saw to a float was three kiddie wagons dressed up to promote childhood literacy? huh? Now granted the VFW had some local bike club ride through on their roaring motorcycles. There was also some veterans carrying a large flag that was the width of two roadway lanes. So after an hour of this political madness I conclude, I miss the good old days!
